If you have a wall make sure its maxed out.

If you have troops and you know you are going to get them killed, wait until 2 minutes before the arriving troops and send all your troops to an alliance settlement. wait until after the battle is over and recall your troops with the abort option and they'll come back unharmed. you'll lose resources, but at least you wont lose your defenses. Keep doing that until you've built up enough to fend him off.

When you see an attack coming:

1. Send all your defensive troops from other towns
2. Beg for help from your allies
3. Never, ever sleep

Seriously, though...the slickest strategy I've ever seen:

Get everyone on IRC for instant reaction and help.
